Collage using a 12x12 inch variegated sheet from the Works with magazine offcuts.

For the Cairo painting the pyramids where formed using a cut stencil and Distress ink from Ranger.

The main domes and minarets where placed in their approximate positions and remaining spaces filled with random offcuts maintaining verticals and horizontals. The sky remained the colour of the substrate.

Black lines using Uniball waterproof for the thin lines and Sharpie for the broader lines where used to indicated windows, doors, smaller domes, battlements and roofs.

Transparent burnt sienna was used to indicate the shallow behind the building with a blue glace added when dry to deepen the colour.

Trying different approaches

First painting with stronger tones at the top and softer tones at the base.

Bubble wrap used to texture the base then some light washes. Orrest Head in Cumbria base on photo on the net.

Overlapping washes and lifting out for the smoke.

Autumn morning Staithes-base on a sketch and painting I did over 15 years ago as viewed from Cowbar Nab looking up Staithes Beck.

This started with trying acrylic ink into watercolour and using granulation medium to break up the ink and allowing the paint to run down the page by gravity to form the trunks. I added some distress ink stamp using polystyrene block to give the small circles- this was wetted in places. With acrylic paint I was trying to get the paint to run off the end of a brush as I had seen in a video from Oz but the paint was not thin enough so I drew a dark outline  with a small flat brush-first with a house shape and then some random construction lines. This was wetted after half drying to give a grey outline. The acrylic colour was Deep Midnight Blue. I quite liked this effect.

I tried this method on an old acrylic ground, made using foam and textured rollers, I had lying around- seems to work ok.

Some ink was added to sharpen the edges.

I had all ready decided to paint an abstract based on a geological fault ( earthquake ) I had photographed in the opencast coal site.
I wanted to work mainly with turquoise against a hot orange with a certain amount of black.
I started with an overall wash of yellow, orange and pink over the entire canvas and and added plastic food wrap to texture the paint. This was removed when dry.
Using a foam roller with several rubber bands tied around I added more texture marks in blue and purple.
I then poured turquoise and orange straight from paint pot on to the canvas and flatten this with plastic food wrap.
Black was added to define the shapes.

Demonstration and workshop of Mixed Media by Tony Montague  using Alcohol coloured pens on tracing paper and plastic drawing film.

Random lines of red, blue and yellow draw on tracing paper then methylated spirits is dropped on to the paper which pushes back the colour. A defuser can be used to produce a fine spray of meths to cause a mottled effect.

Another method he demonstrated was to paint thin tissue paper with watercolour paint and use this as collage material.

This is Norma making an excellent collage using this method.

I tried using the alcohol pens on canvas board but after the initial  ink work separated with the meths

all the texture soaked into the canvas. I then using black sharpie to define the design and then some tube acrylics were added.

Added clear tissue to the background to try and give a sense of depth.
