Saunders Waterford 200 lb paper

Trying new paper from the CAS art club.

Saunders Waterford 200 lb rough paper not the high white. Found it easy to lose the edge of a wash without the paint flowing across the whole wash as with Bockingford - I was forever having to clean up edge when the paint dried. I was able to paint the fence and wire in negatively and not use masking fluid.

Second painting on rough paper. The light on the wall and lane came out well.

Not paper this time. I got my drawing slightly wrong and was able to lift the base of the building to the left.

 New pencil case for 25p from Wilco but was more interested in the plastic sponge packaging inside. Tried the packaging as texture weighed down on a wet wash which gave mottled effect of dark dots on light background the opposite of salt. Maybe use for a beach effect.

Went back the next day to buy some more but they were all gone - end of the range.

Have to keep my eye out for similar packaging.

Original watercolour of the Lower Ogwen Valley in North Wales

Blue wash added to background, stronger tone added to the foreground

and the left hand tree softened with wet cotton wool just pressed on the the paper to weaken the tone.

Original watercolour of  Tal y Lyn Ogwen Farm at the head of the lake from from a sketch done on our holiday in LLanberis.

Extra tone added to background mountains and the pine trees . Re-worked the trees around the farm and added an overall wash to the stone walls and the foreground grass.

Acrylic on 12 x 10 board with textured gesso using bubble wrap and credit card.

Overall wash of cadmium yellow and red then phthalo blue and green added to base.

Sky add - building blocked out at the top  and sided with titanium white with the bottom being faded out. Trees added with ultramarine blue and burnt sienna. Chimneys added in white and sky colour used for the roof.

Some black pen work added to house and the suggestion of a gate

Started watercolour of Church Street in Whitby with an overall wash from the sky to the bottom using a light wash of blue for whites in shadow and the sun sit sides with water to stop differential drying which will buckle the paper even at 200 lb weight- I don't like using masking fluid.

The buildings were added using a variegated wash with a rigger. 

Chester le Street Arts Society January workshop- Fun with acrylics

Workshop over two weeks with six members to paint a textural ground in acrylics using textured rollers, mini sponge rollers, random blocks of coloured tissue paper and some stamping from a design etched into the polystyrene base of the wapping on a  pizza. Colours lemon yellow, cerulean blue and crimson.

Materials used.

A strip of blue was added for the lake and a block of text for the building.

The mountain were indicated by painting in the sky and leaving the initial wash for the mountains ( most people missed this and painted the mountains). The cottage was drawn on and the trees added to outline the cottage and break the horizon- ultramarine blue and crimson . 

The cottage was painting white with pure titanium white with the base faded into the ground white transparent white and matt medium and the stonework and the roof added.

The wall and the foreground were done with both opaque and transparent wash to subdue some of the texture and lose some with paint. Note some positive and negative painting on the gate and the wall.

Due to illness and bad weather only two people completed the work

Olive's painting- overpainted the foreground and lost all the first texture.

Original watercolour painting using salt in the foreground to indicate foliage.

Watercolour from previous week. Another attempt at Cullercoats on 200 lb Bockingford paper size 15 x 11 ins.

Acrylic painting of Elvet Bridge in Durham City. Previous painting of Horton in Ribblesdale recycled by covering with white gesso then yellow and orange acrylic textured with cling film.

Sketch added with felt tipped pen then colour added with brush in the sky and a roller on the buildings.

Darks were added with acrylic inks using a small piece of mount card.

Good news my acrylic painting of Blanchland has been chosen in the Highly Commended Category.

Started glazing two paintings.

Started small painting to practice glazing in acrylics on a 12 x 10 in canvas board previously covered in yellow and orange and textured with cling film. Some roller work was applied to certain area and a loose outline of a cottage add. Glazing was then added to give more depth.
