My collage workshop at Chester-le-Street Tuesday Group.

Two projects :- Town scene and Vases

Random collage strips on a sheet of mount board and a quarter sheet of 200 lb Bockingford using tissue, newsprint and wrapping paper.

My paintings

Vases shapes from stencil then negative flat opaque painting for the background and transparent darks for the table and some tinting on the vases.

 Joe demonstrating using a palette of ultramarine, light red, raw sienna, burnt sienna and burnt umber.

 Sky, background trees and foreground hedges.

My paintings

First is a made up scene and the second is from a sketch of the Cheviots from the Coquet Valley up to the middle distance with the track in the foreground made up. On the second painting an overall wash of red was applied to the whole paper before painting to warm up the scene- although it is not visible.

Workshop with pastel artist Fiona Carvell at Lanchester Monday Art group Oct 2017

First week
Fiona did a still life study with peppers and onion starting with the darks and then the lighter elements. She was using Unison Pastels.

 I choose to do a landscape based on one of my thumbnail sketches in Notebook 01

 Second week

Fiona demonstrated a beach scene near Dunbar.

 

This is one she did earlier. 

I did a beach scene at Dunbar looking towards Bass Rock.

I am still struggling with pastels.

Watercolour workshop at Rothbury

 Eight ladies on the course from 10.00 to 3.00 

Tissue added to the foreground.

1- Graduated sky wash to the tissue paper of cobalt blue with light red and Naples yellow. Then raw sienna and blues and purple. Black ink and granulation medium added to the tissue area.

2-  Painted sea, then the castle, the houses and finally the trees. Painted field to define the top of the wall on the left and wall on the right dark against the field.

3- Added more colour to the field and added some grasses this side of the wall.

Cling film used for texture in the foreground - same colours.

Painting with Gouache

 Working with three colours of gouache after a demo from Andy Taylor on the subject.

 Andy initial washes.

"Scottish Garden"

 Colour blocks painted with 1/2 in flat nylon flat brush

 Washed under the tap to soften the colour- I liked the way the Prussian blue had run in the bottom left corner to create a possible sky and water.

Second attempt trying to let the blue paint the landscape. Some brown added to near piece of land.

 Ran the painting under the tap to wash out the blue and let it run from the mountains down into the lake then sprayed the mountains to run into the sky and blotted the clouds with kitchen roll. This was on an unstretched sheet of 200 lb Bockingford not paper which bowed resulting in some uneven marks in the foreground. Timing is critical as some of the wetter marks washed out completely.
 

Sponged out the water and added ripples and repainted the main peak.

Another go on 1/4 imperial sheet using a flat brush with a ruler to create the ripples
